Is it too soon (or too late) to start planning for retirement? The answer is always ‘no’.

Is it too soon (or too late) to start planning for retirement? The answer is always ‘no’.

Whether you’re 23 or 63, retirement should be on your mind. When you’re further away from retirement, making small, regular contributions to a retirement account can add up to a fully funded retirement thanks to the benefit of time and compound interest. When you’re closer to retirement, contributions can help you “catch up” and close any gaps in reaching your desired retirement income. How you invest your retirement dollars also plays a key role in achieving the retirement you want - you have to consider your risk tolerance, future goals, additional income sources, and expenses. And, it’s not just a one-time thing. Your asset allocation needs to be rebalanced on a regular basis as your needs, or the market, change.

Manatee County Government employees automatically contribute to the Florida Retirement System, which is also funded by your employer. However, in order to have the life of leisure in retirement that many people desire, we suggest that Board of County Commissioners employees also participate in the 457b Deferred Compensation Plan with VOYA, which allows you to pay yourself first with tax-deferred dollars to supplement your Pension. If you don’t already participate, click here to learn more including how to get started. Non-BCC employees: consult with your HR department to determine what retirement account options are available to you.

If you are a BCC employee and already have an account with VOYA, click here to read about the different types of investments available and take a self-assessment quiz. Then, contact Diane Petitta, your VOYA Financial Advisor, at 813-281-3751 to set up a free one-on-one consultation to discuss your retirement plans and receive expert advice. Diane is on-site every month at work sites around the County.
